I just learned edge recently retired?

So what exactly happened? I read he announced one episode of raw he would be retiring due to spine conditions. Was it totally random? Had he been out on injury weeks before, or was he wrestling just fine and then randomly one week decided to announce he was going to retire? Thats so sad I loved edge...still remember him back in the day with the brood :(
