Is he lying about his family on purpose!?? help?

I've been seeing my before for 2 months and when me and my family were at dinner he got a call from someone saying his mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then I asked him if he feels like he needs company to call me and ill go over so he did at night and I went over. That day I was having a bad day and I kind of broke out so he thought I acted like I didn't care and he said the next day that his family needs him and he doesn't have time for a relation ship and said he didn't feel that I cared Ans he said he wants to take things slow and that we were rushing. ...I talk to him and he said that day it was the first time he cried in 20 years and takes the mom to the hospital etc....I'm worried if he's making all this up or do you think my actions from that day caused it? ??? Because I remember a month ago he told me he took his mom to the hospital because they found something in the breast a month ago and it wasn't serious then. What do you think? ?
