I have accidentally cut down my neighbour's washing line. Should I go and explain?

It's awkward because I don't really know them. Because of the way the houses are built our gardens share a border even though they are on another street. The pole that the washing line was on is in my garden.Today while I was trimming the hedge between us I accidentally cut through their washing line. To make it worse there were clothes on it that fell to the floor. I did go round at the time to explain but they were out. They still aren't back, I am dreading them thinking I did it on purpose, what would you do?
