What motorbike should I get for this purpose?

I am planning to get a motorbike. I always dreamed of getting an adventure motorbike. Similar to those they use in Dakar. You see I want it to travel a lot and sometimes on off road. But as I asked before, I found out that the winner of Dakar Marc, used a KTM 450 but the original KTM450 is a motocross bike. So what should I do? Should I go for the BMW adventure bikes?
